CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Did you get anything out of that?” I asked.

“Nope. Certainly not related to Brook’s death.”

“I have to wonder what the two of them are doing together,” I said, “Coral was by his side on the first day of the cruise. Her and Brook. I get the feeling that she’s got more to do with LIT than she lets on. She took over Brook’s job seamlessly.”

“Could be,” Ethan said. But as he did, the waiter returned with our orders. Ethan dipped one of the moon-shaped little pies into a ramekin of pink sauce. When he bit into it, he waved his hand over his mouth. “Hot!”

I opted to try a fried pickle instead, and didn’t burn my mouth. “Or maybe she has more to do with Forest than she lets on.”

“If that’s the case, she might be playing a dangerous game, given the way Leaf acted when he found out Forest was aboard,” Ethan said. “This time, he had an extreme nervous breakdown. But previously, at least as far as Forest says, he’d acted out with violence.”

“If Brook had been killed in a violent way, I might put it on him.”

“But he could well be unpredictable enough that he took revenge out on his assistant in a different way,” Ethan said. “If she was the one who invited Leaf’s mortal enemy.”

“It seems he had his breakdown when Sam informed him that he signed off on Forest’s cabin,” I said. “But that was after the fact.”

Ethan ate another Natchitoches meat pie. Not too hot this time. “These people are a little obtuse. If one of them killed Brook, it’s going to be tough to crack.”

None of them were easy, I thought to myself. But he was probably right.
